S&T: What percent of PNL do you get paid?
MFE Questions
I tried to search for some of this stuff, but couldn't find it, so correct me if some of these topics have already been covered.
-Negating the effect on admissions, is it preferable to get an MFE straight out of undergrad, or after a couple years of work experience? My thought is that it would be easier to do it straight out of undergrad because you would still be adjusted to school.
-With a top-tier MFE (Berkeley, Princeton, MIT, Baruch), how well are you set-up to get into BB S&T? Compared to coming straight out of undergrad (currently at non-target for S&T)
BTIG
I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on BTIG? What is their presence in NYC and Chicago like compared to their SF headquarters?
Thanks so much.
What's going to happen to FICC S&T when rates begin to rise?
Was hoping someone could shed some light on whether FICC S&T revenues will rise or fall over the next decade when the fed starts raising rates. On one hand rising rates will cause a lot of volatility and firms will increasingly hedge against higher rates, I'd anticipate that Rates Vol will be an exciting place to be. On the other hand FI as a whole becomes a lot less attractive in a rising rate environment and a lot of capital invest in other areas such as equities. Obviously a lot of speculation here but if anyone had any thoughts on the subject it'd be interesting to hear.
Is S&T fun like poker?
I've read all the previous threads about poker vs trading, but this thread is different. There was still one important question left lingering in my head. Some background about me: I'm currently interning on a fixed income trading desk at a bulge bracket bank in NYC. I'm thinking really hard about whether S&T is the right career for me. The problem is, even though I sit right beside all the traders, I can't figure out if I'll be passionate about trading because interns aren't allowed to trade. I love playing poker, especially online poker, and I know that I could play poker for 60 hours a week. However, I am not interested in being a professional poker poker due to financial instability and peer disapproval. Given this fact about my personality, would I also love S&T equally?
Citi S&T SA - Desk recommendation and..?
Situation:
- I was looking for the oppts. for IBD SA. but didn't get it. (I was too naive and arrogant, thinking that I know IBD based on previous IBD internship at one of top 3 firms (GS/JPM/MS). turned out I knew nothing.)
- Instead, I got other offers from other firms and finally chose the one from Citi S&T. (Great people / no knowledge of products or desks though)
Q1. Heard 3 chances will be given to SAs (rotation). Any desk recommendation with a couple of reasons?
- Econ/Social Science background, not sure about trading (cuz I don't know a thing) but definitely not Sales.
S&T or Prop trading?
The position is for the summer. I have already done an S&T internship last year, and now I have a choice between the two positions. They are both at the same firm... Think MM.... ie. PJC houlihan Oppenheimer jeffreies. Thanks!
Sales and Trading by Categories: Fixed Income, Commodities, Currencies, and Equities
I understand that there might be a need to develop a specialty when it comes to being an analyst/associate with S&T. I just had a few questions as I am in college right now and would like to get a more relevant handle on the topic. In terms of the four categories:
Which field has the greatest demand for more analysts?
Which field is the easiest to jump into entry level after two prior IB internships?
Is there a significant difference in pay/lifestyle in one versus the others?
Is there any credential (other than experience) that could set me apart from the rest of the competition to gain entry into a field (a license or particular achievement)?
FT S&T generalist - How to play the placement game?
Hi guys,
I was hired as a FT analyst in sales and trading at a large investment bank in NYC. As a FT hire, I didn't get the chance to intern at the firm and was taken in as a generalist. Through my past internships, I have gotten to know that my strengths a better suited for trading and I'm seeking to be placed on a more analytical/technical desk such as Mortgages, Rates products, Distressed debt, etc..
Does anyone have suggestions on how to navigate the generalist placement process. I feel like I have a good chance with this one team (the head of which hired me from the super day) but what is the best way to seal the deal? Should I be upfront and express my interest with that team or play the game a bit and talk to different desks to get them interested in me?
Accelerated recruiting after sophomore BB SA
When is the typical deadline to accept/reject return offers at BBs after a summer?
After my summer in S&T at a BB, I would like to transfer to a bank that's stronger in a product I like. How does one go about finding other offers before the return offer deadline? Are accelerated recruiting processes early enough for somebody to secure an offer before having to make a decision on the other return offer?
S&T SA Interview (Interested in Sales)
Meeting with BB S&T MD
Just wanted to know if there was anything I should be especially prepared for. I do quite a bit of reading, and try to stay up on current events, so just continuing that I feel would be helpful. This is in about 5 days, so not too much time to do much else. He also mentioned that he would like to put me in front of the people who are closer to the hiring process in their firm at some point, not sure if he's going to do that when we meet or not. We've already spoken on the phone and had a few emails back and forth, so hoping this is a good sign.
Anything else I should specifically be aware of? His area is FICC.
Thanks.

S&T Compensation Question
Came across a position at a reputable firm in my area for a Junior Equity Trader role. This firm makes a market in over 250+ companies and pays Institutional Sales, Traders and Research Analysts on commission and not a salary. I know the guys there do pretty well (by my standards) and am curious if anyone on here could provide some insight as to what you are typically paid commission on, and how much one would generally expect to make in their first couple years as a Junior Trader and Trader with this comp structure.
Thanks in advance!
Convince Me Equities is a Bad Play
I'll be interviewing for S&T SA positions this upcoming fall and the vibe I get is that equities is a poor desk to enter. However, I haven't been told why other than brief statements about "automation" and "equities in Dallas." I don't particularly care what others think of me, currently my interests lie in international equities/REITs and possibly equity-linked derivatives, so convince me why entering equities S&T is a bad idea. Also, I am aiming for sales, not trading.
